Mens Berlin Socks (Aka Jarle's Sailor)
This pair goes quickly and will make a very warm gift for a friend.

Make this socks in one or two colours as shown. Made for DH and the yarn is from Berlin.
Materials:
Gauge: 6 stitches equals 1 inch Size 3mm
needles or needles to achieve the desired gauge.
Yarn used:
Worsted yarn (63% New wool and 37% 100g (185m) 2 balls.
SSk: slip 1 as if to knit and another as if to purl, Knit these two sts. together.
K1b: Knit into the back of each knit stitch.
PM: Place marker
SM: Slip maker
WYIB: with yarn in back
Twisted rib: K1b purl one around knit next round as usual.
Pattern stitch: Multiple of 5 sts
Rounds 1 and 2: *K1b, p1, k2, p1 rep from *around.
Rounds 3 and 4: *K1b, p4, repeat from * around,
Cast on 54 sts. loosly dividing sts. evenly onto 3 needles using the 4th needle join stitches being careful not to twist them, place a marker on first
stitch begin twisted rib above for 2 inches increasing 6 sts. evenly across round for a total of 60 sts.
Begin sock pattern above, continue until you have a total of 7 inches or desired length ending on row 4.
Divide for heel flap as follows:
Knit 15 sts from 1st needle onto 3rd needle and slip 15 sts from 3 needle onto 1st needle having marked stitch in centre.
Begining on a wrong side row work heel stitch below increasing one stitch in centre and decreasing that one stitch on the wrong side after completion.
Round 1: knit 3 pm, knit to 3 sts before end of row pm knit 3 Round 2: k3 sm, K1, *slip 1 wyib, k1, repeat from * to end. Continue two rows above for a total length of 3 inches.
Heel shaping:
Mark centre stitch and knit two stitches past it.
K2 tog k1 turn
Round 1: Sl1, purl 6 p2tog purl 1 turn
Round 2: Sl1, k7, k2 tog, k1 turn
Continue shaping heel as above until all sts. are worked ending on wrong side row with 18 sts. Knit 1 row even. Slip 9 of these heel sts onto a spare needle having the other needle to pick up sts.
Don't worry about it now just leave it hanging there.
Shaping the instep: Insert heel needle into the purl bumps picking up 19 sts. total. Knit inreaseing 4 stitches across these sts. Work first pattern row accross instep
pick up another 19 sts on this side of heel flap,knit decreasing 4 sts and kniting the 9 sts from the needle hanging. You are now in the centre of
the heel. You can place a safety pin here if you wish to mark this stitch.
Your stitches are divided among 3 nedles as follows: 24 sts on needle number 1, 30 sts on needle number 2 and 24 sts on needle number 3.
Round 1: knit to 3 sts. on needle number 1, k2tog knit 1.
Work row two of pattern on needle number 2. On needle number 3 ssk knit to end of row .
Round 2: knit 1 round even keeping instep sts in pattern.
Continue rounds 1 and 2 until your stitches on needle number 1 and 3 totals the number on needle number 2.
Continue as established until you are 2 inches short of desired foot length ending on round 4, discontinue pattern on instep knit decreasing 6 sts evenly around.
Toe shaping:
Round 1: Knit to 3 sts of needle number 1 , k2 tog, k1 on needle number 2, k1 ssk, knit to 3 sts of this needle k2tog k1 Needle number 3, ssk k1, knit to end.
Round 2: knit this round even. Continue above until you have 24 sts. remaining. knit stitches from needle number one onto number 3 Leaving a 10" tail weave these together.
